U 10p: Union Flag

The U 10p shows part of the Union Flag, often called the Union Jack, with a large letter U laid over it. It belongs to the 2018 and 2019 A to Z series, and collectors look it up to value a Union Jack 10p found in change. It is one of the 26 A to Z 10p coins and one of the 31 10p designs struck since 1968.

Rarity rank 6 of 30 ranked 10p designs, rarest first (joint)

Rarity: Very rare

Both dates of the Union Flag 10p went into change, so condition decides most of its price. Look for clean edges on the crosses and saltires and few marks across the letter. The 2019 date had a smaller circulation run and generally sells for more than the 2018. A coin still in its Royal Mint pouch or card is worth more than a loose one of the same date, because it has never been through a till.

U 10p mintage and rarity

With 304,000 struck for circulation, the U 10p (Union Flag) is the joint sixth rarest of the 30 ranked 10p designs and has the joint eighth lowest mintage of all 194 circulating UK designs. That puts it in the Very rare band, for mintages under 500,000.

The next rarer 10p is the Q 10p (Queuing), with 303,000 struck, and the next more common is the Capercaillie 10p, with 7,100,000 struck.

Its lowest circulation mintage was in 2019, with 84,000 struck.

How to spot a U 10p

The crossing bands and diagonal saltires of the Union Flag fill much of the tails side, with a large U laid across them. That letter is the only lettering on this side of the coin. For the date, look at the heads side, where 2018 or 2019 follows TEN PENCE in the legend around the fifth portrait of the Queen. The flag design is the same on both dates.

U 10p design

For U, the Quintessentially British A to Z turned to the United Kingdom's own flag. The Union Flag combines St George's red cross for England, St Andrew's white saltire for Scotland and St Patrick's red saltire for Ireland, and it has been flown in its present form since the start of the nineteenth century. On the coin only part of the flag is shown: its crosses and diagonal saltires fill the field as bands of fine parallel lines, with a large capital U imposed on top of them. The Royal Mint Team designed it for the Great British Coin Hunt, which began in March 2018. The U says nothing else on its tails side: the year and TEN PENCE are on the obverse, beside Jody Clark's portrait of the Queen. It was issued into circulation with 2018 and 2019 dates, and The Royal Mint also sold uncirculated coins of both years, which went on sale on 1 March 2018 and 26 February 2019.

It was one of the 26 coins in the A to Z set issued in 2018.

U 10p questions

Is the Union Jack 10p the same as the Union Flag 10p?

Yes. The Royal Mint names the design Union Flag, while most people search for it as the Union Jack 10p. It is the U coin in the A to Z series.

Is the U 10p rare?

By 10p standards, yes, as every A to Z letter was struck in far smaller numbers than the everyday 10p designs. Within the series the U had the standard run, and its 2019 date is the scarcer of the two.

When was the U 10p issued?

Circulation coins carry the date 2018 or 2019. Uncirculated versions went on sale from The Royal Mint on 1 March 2018 and 26 February 2019.
