V 10p: Village

The V 10p shows a British village street with a large letter V standing before it, the village entry in The Royal Mint's A to Z of Britain. People search for it to find out what a 2018 or 2019 village 10p is worth. It is one of the 26 A to Z 10p coins and one of the 31 10p designs struck since 1968.

Rarity rank 6 of 30 ranked 10p designs, rarest first (joint)

Rarity: Very rare

Neither date of the village 10p is scarce by A to Z standards, so wear and marks do most of the work on price. A circulated coin with a clear street scene sells above face value, and one that has lost the detail of the cottages sells for less. The 2019 date is usually priced higher than the 2018 because fewer were made for circulation. Sealed uncirculated coins in Royal Mint pouches and cards sit above anything taken from change.

V 10p mintage and rarity

With 304,000 struck for circulation, the V 10p (Village) is the joint sixth rarest of the 30 ranked 10p designs and has the joint eighth lowest mintage of all 194 circulating UK designs. That puts it in the Very rare band, for mintages under 500,000.

The next rarer 10p is the Q 10p (Queuing), with 303,000 struck, and the next more common is the Capercaillie 10p, with 7,100,000 struck.

Its lowest circulation mintage was in 2019, with 84,000 struck.

How to spot a V 10p

Look for a large capital V standing in front of thatched cottages, with a church spire rising behind them on the right and a lane across the foreground. The V is the only lettering on the tails side. The heads side shows Jody Clark's portrait of the Queen with TEN PENCE and the date, 2018 or 2019; the village scene is the same on both. Coins sold under the names Village and Villages are the same design.

V 10p design

V stands for the British village in the Great British Coin Hunt, the set of alphabet 10ps that The Royal Mint released in 2018 as the Quintessentially British A to Z. The coin shows a village street: a row of thatched cottages with chimneys runs across the scene, a church spire rises behind them among trees on the right, and a lane crosses the foreground. A tall capital V stands in front of the cottages. The reverse is credited to The Royal Mint Team. The name varies too: The Royal Mint called the design Village on its 2018 silver proof and Villages on the 2019 uncirculated coin. The V was struck for circulation with 2018 and 2019 dates, and uncirculated versions went on sale on 1 March 2018 and 26 February 2019. The value and the date appear on the obverse, where TEN PENCE and the year run round Jody Clark's fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

It was one of the 26 coins in the A to Z set issued in 2018.

V 10p questions

Is it the Village or the Villages 10p?

Both names are used for the same V coin. The Royal Mint called it Village on the 2018 silver proof and Villages on the 2019 uncirculated coin.

Who designed the V 10p?

The Royal Mint credits the village scene to The Royal Mint Team.

Is the V 10p rare?

By 10p standards, yes: every A to Z letter was struck in far smaller numbers than the everyday 10p designs. Within the series the V had the standard run, and its 2019 date is the better find.
