200 years of the modern railway £2 (2025)

The Modern Railway £2 was a collector issue from the start. Brilliant uncirculated examples reached buyers in the Royal Mint pack, loose in capsules and in sealed certified cards, while proof collectors had silver, piedfort and gold versions. A sealed Royal Mint pack sells ahead of a loose coin. The crowd of tiny passengers and the engine are the most detailed parts of the design, so check them for rubbing or knocks on any coin sold outside its packaging.

The 200 years of the modern railway £2 was not issued for circulation, so it has no rarity rank.

The Modern Railway £2 shows an early steam engine heading left with a figure standing on it and a string of open wagons full of people behind. Look for THE JOURNEY THAT CHANGED THE WORLD around the left side and top of the yellow ring, with the two anniversary years at the lower right. The edge reads ACTIVE · LOCOMOTION NO 1, and King Charles III is on the obverse. The wagons of passengers set it apart from the Flying Scotsman £2 coin, which shows the locomotive on its own.

On 27 September, two hundred years before this coin was issued, George Stephenson's Locomotion No. 1 pulled out of Shildon with hundreds of passengers aboard and ran 26 miles by way of Darlington to Stockton. It was the first time a steam-powered train had carried passengers on a public railway, and the journey opened the age of steam travel. Railways went on to shape trade, tourism, the post and even football. The Royal Mint marked the 200th anniversary in 2025 with this £2 coin by William Webb, who also designed the HMS Beagle £2 of 2026. His reverse shows the day itself rather than the engine alone: Locomotion No. 1 steams towards the left with a man standing on the engine, hauling a line of wagons crammed with excited passengers that trails away to the right. THE JOURNEY THAT CHANGED THE WORLD curves around the left and top of the outer ring, and the two anniversary years sit together at the lower right. The edge names the engine, ACTIVE · LOCOMOTION NO 1.
