How to spot an Act of Union £2
Look for a centre split into four with jigsaw edges: a thistle and a rose on one shared diagonal stem, and a portcullis in each of the other two quarters. Round the ring, the words TWO and POUNDS alternate with two dates, 2007 at the upper right and the year of the Act at the lower left. The edge says UNITED INTO ONE KINGDOM. The Abolition of the Slave Trade £2 from the same year shows a chain and a large date instead.

The Act of Union of the early eighteenth century brought England and Scotland together under one Parliament at Westminster, creating a single kingdom of Great Britain. For the tercentenary in 2007 The Royal Mint issued this £2 coin, designed by Yvonne Holton. She divided the centre into four quarters and overlaid them with a linking jigsaw motif. A thistle at the upper left and a rose at the lower right grow from one shared stem that runs diagonally between them, while a portcullis, the emblem of Parliament, fills each of the other two quarters. The outer ring is quartered as well, with TWO at the upper left, 2007 at the upper right, POUNDS at the lower right and the year of the Act at the lower left. The edge reads UNITED INTO ONE KINGDOM, and Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse. Brilliant uncirculated coins went on sale in January 2007, early in the anniversary year.
