The colour edition adds printed colour, while the standard coin is plain cupro-nickel. The coin was not issued for circulation, so every example, with King Charles III on its obverse, started in a pack.

Dennis the Menace first appeared in the Beano on 17 March 1951, a spiky-haired troublemaker in a striped jumper, drawn by the artist David Law. His dog Gnasher, an Abyssinian wire-haired tripe hound, joined him later and became nearly as famous. The Royal Mint marked his seventy-fifth year with this coin, made in partnership with Beano Studios, whose artists created the reverse. It shows Dennis leaping across the left of the coin in classic comic style, with Gnasher running beneath him and stars scattered around them. The anniversary number sits large at the upper right above YEARS OF Dennis, and the BEANO logo is at the bottom. A colour edition was sold alongside the plain version.
