The Harry Potter 50p of 2022 opened The Royal Mint's Harry Potter coin collection, struck for the 25th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. People look it up because it was sold only to collectors and never reached change. It is one of the eight Harry Potter 50p coins and one of the 172 50p designs struck since 1969.

Every genuine example was struck to brilliant uncirculated standard or better, so the price turns on presentation and handling rather than wear. Dealers ask most for the coin still in its original Royal Mint card, and less for one moved into a capsule or another company's pack. Fingerprints, scratches or a creased card pull it down. The colour edition and the silver and gold proof versions are separate products with their own prices.

How to spot a Harry Potter 50p
Look for a portrait of Harry in the centre of the reverse, with the words HARRY POTTER around him and 25 YEARS OF MAGIC in tiny microtext. Hold it under a light and rock it to see the number 25 switch to the lightning bolt. Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse rules out the later Harry Potter designs, which carry King Charles III. The colour edition has the illustration printed in colour on the reverse; the standard coin is plain metal. Any example turning up in change was spent from a collector pack.

Harry Potter 50p design
Bloomsbury published Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 1997, and The Royal Mint marked the book's 25th anniversary with a four-coin collection made in partnership with Bloomsbury Publishing, The Blair Partnership and Warner Bros. Consumer Products. This coin opened the set with a portrait of Harry himself. The artwork comes from Jim Kay, who created the first fully illustrated edition of the story, and Ffion Gwillim modelled it for the coin. Harry sits in the centre with HARRY POTTER around him, and 25 YEARS OF MAGIC appears in microtext. The field hides a latent image: tilted one way and then the other, it shows the number 25 and Harry's lightning bolt. The Hogwarts Express, Albus Dumbledore and Hogwarts followed as the next three designs. The heads side carries Jody Clark's fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, and the Hogwarts Express is the only other Harry Potter 50p with her effigy.
