How to spot a Jemima Puddle-Duck 50p
Jemima is the only duck in the Beatrix Potter 50ps, which makes her easy to pick out: a single bird in the centre of the reverse, with JEMIMA PUDDLE-DUCK running round the edge on either side of her. Check the heads side for the 2016 date and the fifth portrait of the Queen. Coins with colour on the duck are silver proofs, not the version that was issued into change.
Jemima Puddle-Duck 50p design
Jemima Puddle-Duck followed the anniversary coin and Peter Rabbit as the third Beatrix Potter 50p of 2016, the year Potter's birth reached its 150th anniversary. The character comes from Potter's tale of 1908, in which Jemima goes looking for somewhere safe to lay her eggs. Emma Noble drew the duck from Potter's own illustrations and gave her the centre of the coin to herself, so her figure cuts through the name JEMIMA PUDDLE-DUCK where it curves round the rim. Noble signed the design with a small en. There is no value on the reverse; that and the date are on the obverse, which carries Jody Clark's fifth portrait of the Queen in the George IV State Diadem. The circulating coin is plain cupro-nickel in the usual seven-sided shape, while a coloured silver proof of the same design was made for collectors.
It was one of the five coins in the Beatrix Potter set issued in 2016.
