Kanga and Roo 50p (2022)

The Kanga and Roo 50p exists only in collector finishes, so what a buyer pays depends on the state of the coin and its packaging. More of the brilliant uncirculated coins left the Royal Mint in distributor cards and sets than in its own fold-out pack. Marks on Kanga and on Roo in his high chair lower the price of a loose coin. The colour edition and proofs, issued to the smaller 2022 limits, are valued on their own.

The Kanga and Roo 50p was not issued for circulation, so it has no rarity rank.

This is the only coin in the series built around a mother and child: Kanga feeding Roo in his high chair, with Kanga & Roo lettered at the upper right. The ampersand is a quick check, as no other Pooh 50p uses one. Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse with the date 2022. It was sold in collector packs, cards and capsules only and was never issued for circulation, so it will not appear in your change.

• Colour edition: A colour-printed brilliant uncirculated edition sold by The Royal Mint, with a maximum mintage of 12,500; 11,244 were made.

Kanga is the only female character in A. A. Milne's Pooh books, and she and her joey Roo appear in the Forest without warning in the 1926 Winnie-the-Pooh. The other animals are suspicious of the newcomers and plot to swap Piglet for Roo, a trick Kanga sees through, playing along and giving Piglet a bath. The Royal Mint released their coin on 1 August 2022, the eighth in its Winnie the Pooh and Friends series and the second of three that year. For the reverse, Royal Mint designer Daniel Thorne, working with The Walt Disney Company, chose E. H. Shepard's drawing of Kanga feeding Roo, who sits in a high chair. At the upper right, the names read Kanga & Roo over two lines in upper and lower case, under a bee that keeps the link with the other coins. Turn the coin over and Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appears. The Royal Mint's pack for the standard coin was the series' fold-out wallet, and colour-printed, silver proof and gold proof editions were sold as well.

It was one of the three coins in the Winnie the Pooh set issued in 2022.
