No circulation strikes were made, so a Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia 50p is always a collector coin and its value follows its preservation. Buyers prefer coins still in the original Royal Mint pack and check that the lenticular panel is free of scratches. The limited colour edition has its own price, separate from the standard version, and the silver and gold proofs are collected apart again.

How to spot a Star Wars Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia 50p

Two heroes side by side mark out this coin: Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. The winged Jedi Order crest in the lenticular panel is the detail to check, as it alternates with the Rebel Alliance Starbird when you tilt the coin. The R2-D2 and C-3PO coin also uses the Starbird, but pairs it with Tatooine. Look for King Charles III on the heads side and the 2023 date; the coin was never released into change.

Star Wars Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia 50p design

Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia were given the third coin in the Royal Mint's Star Wars character duos collection, which celebrated 40 years of Return of the Jedi, the 1983 film. The brother and sister had been central to the saga since they first appeared on screen in 1977, and here they stand for the heroic side of the story after the villains of the previous coin. The reverse, credited to Lucasfilm Ltd., places the pair beneath a lenticular panel, with STAR WARS and the small Lucasfilm credit lettered underneath. Tilt it and the panel moves between two emblems of the good side: the Starbird of the Rebel Alliance and the Jedi Order's winged crest. On the other side is the King, in Martin Jennings' portrait. The design was sold in brilliant uncirculated finish, in a limited colour edition and as silver and gold proofs, and it carries the 2023 date like the two coins before it.

It was one of the three coins in the Star Wars set issued in 2023.
