The Star Wars R2-D2 and C-3PO 50p, dated 2023, was the Royal Mint's first Star Wars coin, showing the two droids inside the Millennium Falcon. It was sold to collectors and never entered circulation. It is one of the eight Star Wars 50p coins and one of the 172 50p designs struck since 1969.

The two droids are the clue: R2-D2 and C-3PO, shown inside the Millennium Falcon. Tilt the coin and the small window above them flips between Tatooine and the Rebel Starbird; Tatooine appears on no other Star Wars 50p. The rest of the duos collection shows Darth Vader with Emperor Palpatine, Luke with Leia, and Han Solo with Chewbacca, while the 2024 vehicle coins show ships rather than characters. The heads side has the King's portrait, and this is not a coin you will get in change.

Star Wars R2-D2 and C-3PO 50p design
Star Wars reached UK coins for the first time in 2023, when The Royal Mint began a four-coin 50p collection of character pairs from the original trilogy. The set was timed for the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi, released in 1983, and this droid coin opened it. The Royal Mint credits the design to Lucasfilm Ltd., whose copyright and trademark credit appears in small letters on the coin. R2-D2 and C-3PO are shown together inside the Millennium Falcon, with STAR WARS lettered beneath them. Above the pair sits a lenticular panel that behaves like a hologram: tilt the coin and the image switches between the planet Tatooine and the Rebel Alliance Starbird. The obverse carries the first coinage portrait of King Charles III, by Martin Jennings. As well as the standard brilliant uncirculated coin, the design was issued in colour and as silver and gold proof 50ps, and it also appeared on larger silver and gold proof coins.
It was one of the three coins in the Star Wars set issued in 2023.
