A quarter of a century after The Fellowship of the Ring reached cinemas, The Royal Mint began a seven-coin 50p series celebrating The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, made in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products. The first coin is given to the Ring itself. In the story, the One Ring was forged in secret by the Dark Lord Sauron to corrupt and enslave, and the quest to destroy it rests on nine companions, with Frodo as the Ring-bearer. The reverse shows the Ring at an angle with the blazing Eye of Sauron set within it, and Elvish script running around the band and across the lower right of the coin. The design is credited to New Line Productions, Inc., whose small ©NLP credit appears on the reverse. The reverse carries a caustic feature that reflects an image of the Eye when light catches the coin. A colour edition with an issue limit was sold alongside the plain coin. The obverse holds the King's portrait by Martin Jennings.
