Game of Thrones first aired in 2011 and ran for eight seasons, turning the A Song of Ice and Fire novels into HBO's fantasy drama about the fight for power across the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. Fifteen years after that television debut, the Royal Mint marked the anniversary with two 50p coins, each built on one of the elemental themes named in the books' title. Fire is the Targaryen half of the pair. Designer Ffion Rees shows the dragon Drogon breathing flames beside the house banner of House Targaryen. The words GAME OF and THRONES are set on two lines with a trademark sign, and a small HBO copyright and trademark credit appears on the design. Its partner, the Ice coin, went on sale at the same time and shows the Night King. The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III.
