Hogwarts 50p (2023)

The Hogwarts 50p shows Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and closed The Royal Mint's four-coin Harry Potter 25th anniversary set in 2023. Collectors search for it to finish the set, since it was never put into circulation. It is one of the eight Harry Potter 50p coins and one of the 172 50p designs struck since 1969.

Hogwarts 50p value

Uncirculated
typical £12, range £5 to £12

Worked out from 5 published prices (3 dealer prices, 1 price guide and 1 sold-price report), each condition from its own prices, checked in September 2026.

Not issued for circulation

As a brilliant uncirculated issue with no circulating counterpart, this coin is valued on its finish and packaging. Sellers ask more for it in the original Royal Mint pack than loose in a capsule or in another firm's card. Spots, hairline scratches or a bent card bring the price down. The colour version, and the silver and gold proofs struck with the same castle design, each have a separate market from the plain coin.

Hogwarts 50p mintage and rarity

The Hogwarts 50p was not issued for circulation, so it has no rarity rank.

How to spot a Hogwarts 50p

The castle fills the reverse, with HOGWARTS running round it and 25 YEARS OF MAGIC in microtext. The latent 25 and lightning bolt appear on the left side of the design when the coin is tilted. King Charles III is on the obverse, which it shares with the Dumbledore coin but not with the two 2022 designs. The colour version prints the castle in full colour. Like the rest of the set, it was a collector issue, so it does not turn up in normal change.

Hogwarts 50p design

The last coin in the anniversary collection for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone turned from characters to the school where the stories are set. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is shown as Jim Kay drew the castle for the 2015 fully illustrated edition of the first book, with Ffion Gwillim again preparing the artwork for the 50p. The lettering HOGWARTS wraps around the castle, with 25 YEARS OF MAGIC in microtext. This time the latent image sits to the left of the design; catch it at the right angle and it shows either the number 25 or the lightning bolt. Issued in 2023, the coin pairs the castle with Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III, completing the set's change of portrait from Queen Elizabeth II to the King. The Royal Mint returned to Harry Potter in 2024 with a separate series of iconic scenes from the stories.

In the Harry Potter set it was issued in 2023 together with the Albus Dumbledore 50p, and the Harry Potter The Winged Keys 50p followed in 2024.

Was the Hogwarts 50p released into circulation?

No. The castle coin reached buyers in Royal Mint packs, in colour and as silver and gold proofs, but none were issued for everyday use.

How many coins are in the Harry Potter 25th anniversary 50p set?

Four: Harry Potter and the Hogwarts Express in 2022, then Albus Dumbledore and Hogwarts in 2023. The Hogwarts coin is the last of them.
