Harry Potter The Winged Keys 50p design
After the four anniversary coins of 2022 and 2023, The Royal Mint began a new run of Harry Potter 50ps built around memorable scenes, made in partnership with Warner Bros. The Winged Keys was the first of them and the fifth Harry Potter 50p. It takes a moment from the first book: on the way to the Philosopher's Stone, Harry, Ron and Hermione must search a flock of flying keys on broomsticks to find the one that unlocks the next chamber. The coin shows Harry flying round the chamber and reaching for the key with the broken wing, surrounded by other winged keys and ornate decoration, with the title THE WINGED KEYS. The Royal Mint credits the design to Warner Bros. Entertainment; Royal Mint product designer Bella Biggs remastered the stylised illustration for the coin. The scene was chosen as a tribute to Harry's friendship with Ron and Hermione, and King Charles III's portrait is on the obverse.
In the Harry Potter set it followed the Hogwarts 50p of 2023 and was issued in 2024 together with the Harry Potter The Black Lake 50p.
