Since the Black Lake 50p was never issued for change, every example started as a brilliant uncirculated collector coin and its value rests on how it has been stored. Sellers price the original Royal Mint pack above loose capsule coins and third-party cards. Rubbing, scratches and fingerprints on the reverse reduce the price, as does a damaged pack. The limited colour edition and the proof strikes in silver and gold are priced as separate items.

This is the only Harry Potter 50p set underwater: Harry is caught among the merpeople, with the words THE BLACK LAKE along the bottom of the reverse. There is no castle, train or broomstick in the scene, which rules out the other designs at a glance. King Charles III appears on the heads side. A colour edition was made in a limited presentation, and the plain version came in Royal Mint packs; none went into circulation.

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry is entered into the Triwizard Tournament, and for the second task he has to dive into the Black Lake and bring back someone the merpeople have taken. The Royal Mint chose that moment for the second coin in its iconic moments series, following the Winged Keys earlier in 2024, which made it the sixth Harry Potter 50p. The reverse is an underwater picture of Harry being seized by the merpeople because he tries to rescue more than one of his friends, with the title THE BLACK LAKE running beneath. Bella Biggs of The Royal Mint remastered a stylised illustration for the design, made in partnership with Warner Bros., and The Royal Mint credits the artwork to Warner Bros. Entertainment. Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III is on the obverse, and a limited colour edition was sold alongside the plain coin.

In the Harry Potter set it was issued in 2024 together with the Harry Potter The Winged Keys 50p, and the Harry Potter The Flying Car 50p followed in 2025.
