The Gruffalo and Mouse 50p (2019)

The Gruffalo and Mouse 50p is the second of the Royal Mint's two 2019 Gruffalo coins and the first to put both characters on a coin together. It was issued in brilliant uncirculated packs only, not into change. It is one of the three Gruffalo 50p coins and one of the 172 50p designs struck since 1969.

The Gruffalo and Mouse 50p value

Uncirculated
typical £16, range £13 to £18

Worked out from 7 published prices (4 dealer prices, 2 sold-price reports and 1 price guide), each condition from its own prices, checked in September 2026.

Not issued for circulation

Condition and packaging set the price of a Gruffalo and Mouse 50p. A coin still sealed in the Royal Mint's fold-out card is worth more than one that has been taken out, and fewer of this design were made than of the first 2019 Gruffalo coin. Marks on the two characters, or on the field around them, reduce the price of a loose coin.

The Gruffalo and Mouse 50p mintage and rarity

The Gruffalo and Mouse 50p was not issued for circulation, so it has no rarity rank.

How to spot The Gruffalo and Mouse 50p

Count the characters. This coin shows the Gruffalo confronting the Mouse in the wood, while the earlier 2019 coin has the Gruffalo by himself; both carry THE GRUFFALO® and Jody Clark's portrait of the Queen dated 2019. The 2024 Gruffalo's Child coin is easy to rule out because of its snow scene and King Charles III obverse. Beyond the standard coin, the Royal Mint struck this scene in silver proof and gold proof.

The Gruffalo and Mouse 50p design

The Gruffalo and Mouse 50p came out on 17 October 2019, eight months after the first Gruffalo coin, to continue the Royal Mint's celebration of twenty years of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's picture book. Where the February coin showed the monster alone, this one goes back into the deep dark wood for a scene from the story, with the Gruffalo confronting the little brown Mouse. It was the first time the two stars of the book had appeared together on a coin. Once again the reverse was designed by Magic Light Pictures, which makes the animated Gruffalo films, and it follows Scheffler's illustrations, with THE GRUFFALO® lettered on the design. It was packed in bright fold-out packaging that reflects the book's original artwork and opens out to reveal Gruffalo facts.

In the Gruffalo set it was issued in 2019 together with The Gruffalo 50p, and The Gruffalo's Child 50p followed in 2024.

The Gruffalo and Mouse 50p questions

Is the Gruffalo and Mouse 50p rare?

It was never issued for circulation, so it is not ranked against circulating 50p coins, and fewer were made than of the first Gruffalo 50p. It was sold in brilliant uncirculated packs and as silver and gold proofs.

How do you tell the two 2019 Gruffalo 50p coins apart?

The first, from February, shows the Gruffalo alone. The second, released in October, shows him confronting the Mouse in the wood.
